How to Grocery Shop
Answers to all the frequently asked questions that arise when shopping for your meal plan.
It’s completely normal to feel overwhelmed when you’re starting something new—especially when it comes to nutrition. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that you’re learning, and you’re going to be just fine.
One question I used to get all the time when creating meal plans was, “What brand of ____ should I buy to match the plan?” People asked this about everything—bread, crackers, yogurt, milk, you name it.
Most people expect the answer to be: pick the brand that matches the calories and macros exactly.
But here’s what I actually recommend: choose the brand with the fewest, simplest ingredients.
I don’t stress about perfectly matching calories and macros because it can become really time-consuming, and at the end of the day, food quality matters so much more. For example, you can now buy bread with “zero carbs”—which is wild when you think about it. When you look at the ingredients, it’s mostly fillers and highly processed additives. And we know that diets high in ultra-processed foods are linked to increased risk of chronic health issues.
So, in short: if the macros aren’t an exact match but the ingredients are real, whole foods and not overly processed, that’s the brand I’d want you to choose.
